ABOUT THE BARN STUDIO
GALLERY
The Barn Studio Gallery bears a date stone above the entrance door of 1889 and C.H.T. being the initials of Charles Henry Tempest (baronet) (1834-1894) who owned the estate at that time.
The entrance door is extra tall and wide to accommodate access for the farms working horses in that era pre mechanisation.
The barn has been sympathetically renovated and still contains many original features including a tethering ring, impressive original A frame and a cat ladder for accessing the hay loft.
The building is a beautiful and relaxing creative space with a lovely atmosphere and amazing views over the Pennines, Bolton and Manchester.
If you’re ever in Bolton, you are welcome to contact me to make an appointment and stop by The Barn Studio Gallery.
Several open days are planned for the coming months which will be posted on the website, however with us being a working farm you are always welcome to call as we are always in.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF OLD HARTS FARM, WALKER FOLD ROAD, BOLTON
Charles Henry Tempest’s daughter Ethel Mary Tempest married Miles Stapleton, 10th Lord Beaumont of Carlton Towers, in 1892. Her fortune is said to have saved the Carlton Towers estates and brought into that family home many of its most interesting paintings.
The estate passed on to her daughter Mona Josephine Tempest Stapleton, becoming the 11th Baroness Beaumont in 1896. In 1914 she married Bernard Edward, 3rd Lord Howard of Glossop, who was the great-grandson of the 13th duke of Norfolk. Their eldest son, Miles Francis Stapleton Fitzalan Howard (b.1915), inherited his mother’s barony of Beaumont and his father’s barony of Glossop and he succeeded his cousin as 17th duke of Norfolk.
Other original features include a tethering ring and, impressively, the original A framed beams on the upstairs level.
The building has recently been used as a store and office before a sympathetic conversion to create a beautiful, relaxing creative space with a lovely atmosphere and amazing views from the front window sharing the view over Bolton and beyond.
The motto “Meulx Serra” translates to “All I see I own” from old French we believe. The coronet represents the baroness, the 2 hunting hounds are supporters signifying loyalty.
